The Ferrari stolen from former F1 driver Gerhard Berger in 1995 has been recovered nearly 30 years later.
A red Ferrari F512M Testarossa stolen from a hotel in Berger, Italy after the San Marino Grand Prix was recovered by the Metropolitan Police on Monday.
In January, police received a tip from the Italian automaker that a Ferrari being bought and sold between a U.S. buyer and a British broker had been flagged as stolen.
The Metropolitan Police Department’s Organized Vehicle Crime Unit soon discovered that the sports car was Berger’s missing Ferrari 28 years earlier.
The car, which has a top speed of 300km/h, was in Japan until it was brought to the UK late last year.
Police have seized a long-lost vehicle worth $444,000 before it can be sold and transferred to an American buyer.
The Ferrari was stolen from Berger’s hotel in Imola, but not without a fight.
The F1 driver, who ultimately finished third at the San Marino Grand Prix, was standing in front of his car while the thieves were behind the wheel. By Road & Track.
When that failed to stop them, he chased them in his friend’s Volkswagen Golf, but to no avail.
Around the same time, Berger’s teammate Jean Alesi had his gray Ferrari 355 stolen from a hotel parking lot.
The car has not yet been found.
No arrests have been made in either carjacking.
