CNN analyst Van Jones suggested Monday that President Biden pushed back on concerns about his age by emphasizing “good grandpa” over “bad grandpa” in this week’s State of the Union address.
“Unfortunately, he can’t get any younger, so there’s not much they can do about it.” We have a chance to remind people that it’s better to have them,” Jones said of the president in an interview with CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer. “And it really…he has to lean into it.”
Jones was likely referring to former President Donald Trump, the front-runner in the Republican primary and the likely Republican nominee for the White House, whom he has criticized numerous times.

Biden is the oldest sitting U.S. president, and if re-elected, he will be 86 years old at the end of his second term. Trump, 77, is nearly four years younger.
The president’s age, mental acuity, and ability to serve a second term have been the subject of much debate for much of his presidential term. Concerns were further heightened when a special counsel report released last month described him as an “elderly man with a poor memory.”
“He’s got to own it. He’s an older guy, but a good older guy,” Jones said Monday. “He’s a good man, he’s done well for his country and he’s built a track record on that.”
“But no one is saying this isn’t a real problem or that the media is just making it up, but that’s not true,” he added.
Biden last week dismissed concerns about his age, insisting that what really matters is “how old you think.”
