Ty Pennington’s near-death illness made him want to ‘live to the fullest’

Ty Pennington gave fans an update on his health following a near-death experience due to a throat abscess.

“I’m great,” Pennington told Entertainment Tonight about eight months after his hospitalization. “The great thing is that when you’re about to die, you get a lot of attention. It’s so nice to be loved so much.”

“I have other plans…no, I’m just kidding!” he joked.

Pennington was intubated and underwent emergency surgery in 2023 after a throat abscess caused his throat to close, which he called “very dramatic.” After his near-death experience, the “Rock the Block” star said he learned to live life “to the fullest.”

“I thought to myself, you never know when your timecard is going to be pulled, so wake up and live every day to the fullest,” Pennington said.

“That’s why the ’60s is going to be the time to start everything, and that’s what I like about being involved in these projects, because we all want to make sure we do something memorable. Because I want to accomplish it.”

Pennington told fans that he was hospitalized in July 2023.

“From the red carpet to the ICU… last week was funny!” he wrote in an Instagram post at the time. He continued, “To reveal why I’m MIA… Appeared on the @barbiethemovie red carpet on Sunday, flew to Colorado to start filming in Breckenridge on Monday, then on Tuesday morning… I woke up at 4 a.m. and could barely breathe.”

“As it turns out, the sore throat I had last month was actually an abscess that had grown so large that it was blocking my airway,” Pennington continued. “The next thing I knew, I was intubated and taken to the intensive care unit in Denver. I had surgery on Wednesday and was released from the intensive care unit yesterday afternoon.”
