Haley (RS.C.)’s move will officially hand over the Republican nomination to former President Donald Trump, ensuring her nomination as the Republican candidate and a rematch with President Joe Biden in November. becomes possible.
But Haley’s campaign says she has no plans to announce her endorsement Wednesday. Instead, she plans to push Trump to win support from Republicans and independents who supported her, sources said.
Trump campaign spokeswoman Caroline Levitt said in an interview. fox business He said he expected Haley to support Trump “again, given that voters and states in this country have made their choices very clear.”
“It’s past time for Nikki Haley to step out of this race and rally around the president,” she said. “He’s been saying this for weeks, months in fact. So we encourage her to do just that, to follow the will of her Republican voters.”
Haley continued to resist pressure to withdraw from the race, despite Trump’s lead in previous races, including in Haley’s home state of South Carolina.
Haley was considered a dark horse candidate at the beginning of the race, but the former South Carolina governor was able to gain support after several heated Republican debates last summer and fall.
“I’m giving up on this fight just because the majority of Americans don’t support both Donald Trump and Joe Biden,” he said at a campaign watch party on the night of the South Carolina primary. “No,” he said, adding that other states “have the right to rematch.” It’s not a Soviet-style election where there’s only one candidate, it’s a real choice. ”
Regardless of her performance on the debate stage, Republican primary voters made their choice, and Ms. Haley lost to Mr. Trump in all but one primary in Vermont on Super Tuesday.
In addition, while several 2024 Republican candidates have expressed support for Trump to become the nominee after withdrawing from the race, Haley said she will support the Republican candidate at the Republican National Committee. He said he no longer felt bound by that promise.
In the end, Ms. Haley was unable to muster enough support within the Republican Party to surpass Mr. Trump’s support.
Haley served as ambassador to the United Nations under the Trump administration and previously served three terms in the South Carolina House of Representatives.
