Donald Trump just gained new support after a huge Super Tuesday.

Mitch McConnell has announced his support for Donald Trump.

Axios reported:

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has endorsed former President Trump in the 2024 presidential election.

Why it matters: Mr. McConnell recently announced that he would step down as Senate Republican leader in November after a long and contentious relationship with the former president.

The endorsement was first reported by the Washington Post hours after former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley withdrew from the presidential race.

“It is clear that former President Trump has the support he needs among Republican voters to be the nominee for president of the United States,” McConnell said in a statement.

In late February, Mitch McConnell announced that he would resign as Senate Republican leader in November.

The Associated Press reported:

Mitch McConnell, who held power for nearly two decades in the face of dramatic Republican turmoil and became the longest-serving Senate majority leader in history, will step down from his post in November.

McConnell, who turned 82 last week, announced his decision Wednesday in the well of the Senate. It was the same chamber he watched in awe from the bench behind him when he arrived in the Senate in 1985, and grew increasingly comfortable with the front row seats afforded to party leaders.

“One of the most underrated talents in life is knowing when it’s time to move on to the next chapter of your life,” he says. “So I want to stand before you today and tell you that this will be my last term as Senate Republican leader.”
