It’s hard to imagine how we would react in a horrifying situation, but an Atlanta woman taken hostage had the foresight to communicate the nature of her situation by calling out “help me.” I spoke the words.
When officers were directed to an apartment on Piedmont Avenue in northeast Atlanta in late January, they knew they were responding to a domestic dispute. It was heard that a woman and her child were being “held against their will.”
However, upon arrival, the alleged abuse victim appeared uncooperative.
A woman tells the police to “help me”
Domestic violence calls can be complicated. When loved ones and conflicting emotions are involved, it’s not always that simple. In fact, according to find the law, 80 to 90 percent of domestic violence victims recant their claims after they are reported to the police. Although domestic violence charges cannot be dropped once the police intervene and the state charges, they very often choose to change or retract their original statements.
It appears the Piedmont victim may have been protecting her abuser. She refused to allow police officers into her home and refused to leave her home. But she uttered the words “help me”, showing that she really needed help.
The suspect in this case is 34-year-old Andre Ross. He is believed to be the child’s father and has multiple felony warrants. Police notified ABC News His criminal charges include armed robbery, weapons offenses, obstruction and probation violation.
Officers noticed a silent signal and set up a perimeter around the building. SWAT and hostage negotiators were called to the scene. They “were able to talk to him.” [Andre Ross] He surrendered without incident.” According to the police.
Authorities took the suspect to the Fulton County Jail on suspicion of false imprisonment, and fortunately the woman and child were able to leave the apartment with police and seek safety.
Thankfully, the woman responded in a way that kept both herself and her children safe while informing the police of the horrific events happening inside her home.
