Giants’ other safety options if they don’t bring back Xavier McKinney

With the release of multiple safeties, the market is full of options for the Giants to consider if they don’t bring back 24-year-old free agent Xavier McKinnie.

He earned his second career first-team All-Pro selection with the Titans in 2021 under new Giants defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, but appears to be a step behind after a midseason trade to the Eagles. Looked. After recording at least four interceptions in five seasons, he still ranked as the No. 23 safety in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus, despite having only one interception.

Jordan Poyer (32 years old)

The Bills’ salary cap bloodbath on Tuesday certainly caught the attention of Giants general manager Joe Schon and head coach Brian Daboll, given their ties to Buffalo. The ball-hawking Poyer is durable and seemed to get better with age until last year (first-team All-Pro in 2021, Pro Bowler in 2022).

Cam Carl (25 years old)

The rising former seventh-round pick is one of the most underrated players in the league, playing in the box (428 snaps last season), deep (422 snaps) and in the slot (166 snaps). He has the versatility to do it. He hasn’t had an interception in his last three seasons in Washington, but he’ll hit stick the running back in the hole.

Julian Blackmon (25 years old)

Coincidentally or not, Shane has a habit of signing former Colts (Mark Glowinski, Bobby Okereke, Parris Campbell). Blackmon has career highs with 88 tackles and four interceptions. He is a reliable tackler and can be used in the slot to cover bigger receivers or tight ends, but he doesn’t often win speed matches.

Kyle Duggar (27 years old)

The Giants did not put a transition tag on McKinnie (one year, $13.8 million) like the Patriots did with Dugger. Would he accept the same multi-year offer that McKinney didn’t? If so, the risk is just waiting to see if the Patriots play the game, and there is no compensation. He is built like a hybrid safety linebacker, as both Daboll and Bowen are known through their coaches.

Jordan Fuller (26 years old)

The New Jersey native is a good complement to fellow starter Jason Pinnock, who is an excellent blitzer. Fuller is more of a center fielder, running well and in good position to compete for catches. He was a two-time Rams captain and Super Bowl champion, which is important in a locker room that could lose longtime leaders McKinnie and Saquon Barkley.
