Mets’ Jose Quintana has strong outing in rebound effort

Jose Quintana, the top candidate to start the opening game, allowed one earned run with four hits and six strikeouts in three innings during the Mets’ 3-1 victory over the Nationals.

“I felt a lot better today,” Quintana said after recovering from a tough battle in his Grapefruit League debut. “That’s good. I feel like I’m making progress.”

Joey Wendle was called for interference while attempting to cover second base on a pickoff play.

The league authorizes umpires to issue interference charges against infielders who block a runner’s direct path to the bases, and Wendle was ruled to have obstructed Ildemaro Vargas’ return to second base. Vargas was given third base.

It caught my eye

Francisco Alvarez did it all. Behind the plate, the 22-year-old went 3-for-3 with a steal candidate.

At the plate, Alvarez hit a 408-foot home run to the left field seats, going 1-for-2.

Friday schedule

Luis Severino will start in the game between the Mets and Marlins starting at 6:40 p.m. in Jupiter, Florida.
