Ex-CIA head Brennan hints at intel community withholding ‘sensitive’ info from Trump after he gets nomination

Former CIA Director John Brennan told MSNBC’s Nicole Wallace on Thursday that the intelligence agency will continue to collect “classified” intelligence information from former President Trump, even if he becomes the Republican presidential nominee later this year. He said there is a possibility that it will be withheld.

MSNBC’s senior national security and intelligence analyst said that Mr. Trump will brief some national security information, following a 72-year tradition in which the current administration appoints U.S. intelligence officials to brief presidential candidates from major political parties. He expressed confidence that he would be accepted. No sensitive information is captured.

He noted that Trump was indicted on charges of mishandling classified information, suggesting that Trump might misuse the information if he learns of it.

Mr. Brennan’s assessment came after Mr. Wallace brought up a new opinion. Politico article U.S. intelligence officials are planning to give an explanation to President Trump, but are hesitating because of the “handling of classified information,” he said in detail.

“Pending court cases and President Trump’s historically cavalier attitude toward national security information have made this year’s otherwise modest decision fraught with unusual risks,” the article said.

“It’s a little surreal that someone who is accused of mishandling classified information would be briefed on classified information,” Brennan told Wallace.

He acknowledged that it is “tradition” for sitting presidents to hold such press conferences, so it “makes sense” for Biden to do so. But the former CIA director hinted that intelligence agency leaders would not provide particularly sensitive information that President Trump could exploit.

“I am now confident that my former intelligence colleagues will provide a briefing that does no harm to the sources or methods in terms of providing information that Donald Trump could exploit. .”

Brennan elaborated on the content of Trump’s press conference, saying, “But they will provide an analytical overview and explanation of some of the world’s hotspots and will inform Donald Trump of his current assessment. ” he said.

He went on to suggest that Trump cannot be trusted, adding: “I think it’s going to be an analysis that lacks the sources, the methods, the secrets that we’re most concerned about, the kinds of things that were involved in all of that.” It’s a document he had in the bathroom and everywhere around Mar-a-Lago. ”

If the former president accepts the press conference, Brennen said, “the president will likely look down on it in the same way that he has looked down on not just US intelligence officials but the US intelligence community itself for many years.” I concluded with.

Brennan has been fueling theories that Trump compromised U.S. intelligence and is a foreign agent since the former president first ran for office. Throughout his first term, Trump promoted the theory that he colluded with Russia to win the presidential election, but in 2020, behind closed doors, investigators admitted they had “found no conspiracy” between the two parties. He was also among about 50 former intelligence officials who signed a letter suggesting Hunter Biden’s laptop revealed during the 2020 election was Russian disinformation.
