Hello world! There’s an absolutely massive game this afternoon which is inevitably overshadowing everything else, but on any ordinary Sunday this would be a key and deliciously juicy fixture: two great, big clubs with recently barren trophy cabinets fighting for a chance to play in Europe’s premier competition next season. A home win would take Villa, currently fourth, eight points clear of Spurs in fifth (who would have a game in hand, to be fair), a gap that with 10 (or 11) games remaining looks genuinely daunting.

Promising signs, for the neutral: Ollie Watkins has seven goals in his last six league games and Villa’s last seven domestic fixtures (there was an inconvenient goalless draw at Ajax in midweek which we’ll overlook) have seen an average of 4.3 goals each; Spurs last kept a clean sheet against a team that isn’t Burnley way back in December and since their superb early-season form fell apart on Halloween (or thereabouts) have managed only two. There will, surely, be goals. (If the season started on 1 November Spurs would have played 16 league matches, winning 24 points and just once away, and sit ninth; Villa would have played 17, won 33 points, and still be fourth).

Here’s Ben Fisher’s thing to look out for in this game:

When the team news dropped 75 minutes before kick-off at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Thursday, it offered a major indication of Unai Emery’s thinking and quite how significantly he views Tottenham’s visit to Villa Park on Sunday. John McGinn, the captain, in-form forward Leon Bailey and full-backs Matty Cash and Alex Moreno began the game on the bench, with 20-year-old midfielder Tim Iroegbunam given his second start, almost two years after his full debut. Spurs trail fourth-placed Villa by five points but have a game in hand so a home victory would establish a welcome buffer between them and their nearest challengers for a Champions League place. Villa won the reverse fixture in November courtesy of Pau Torres and Ollie Watkins goals and a repeat would be priceless.

“I’m really happy These two games today,” Will Oliver wrote. “I’ve been a Villa fan since 1992 when we first broadcast weekly EPL highlights here in the US. They finished second behind Man Utd, but since then it’s been mediocre. But Emery is very positive. The team is very happy and enthusiastic. I don’t care if we finish 4th or 5th. It’s been a very enjoyable journey this year. It’s helped us get through some tough moments. And Man City vs. Liverpool ?Not a bad Sunday.” That’s the sunny attitude I’m looking for, Will.

preamble

Hello World! There’s an absolutely huge game this afternoon that will inevitably overshadow everything else, but on a normal Sunday this would be an important, deliciously juicy game. Two great clubs whose trophy shelves have recently fallen into disrepair will compete for the chance to play in Europe’s next top competition. season. A home win would put Villa, currently in fourth place, eight points clear of fifth-placed Spurs (who, to be fair, have a game in hand), but with 10 (or 11) games remaining, that difference is truly mind-boggling.

Promising signs for the neutrals: Ollie Watkins has scored seven goals in his last six league games, with Villa’s last seven domestic matches (an inconvenient goalless draw at Ajax in midweek overlooked) ) each averaged 4.3 goals per game. The last time Spurs kept a clean sheet against a team other than Burnley was way back in December, and they have kept just two clean sheets since their excellent early season form collapsed on Halloween (or thereabouts). It’s just a game. There will always be a goal. (If the season started on November 1st, Spurs would have played 16 league games and would have won 24 points, with one away win and would be in 9th place.Villa would have played 17 league games and had points). 33 and would still have been in 4th place).

Here’s what Ben Fisher should look out for in this match.

When the team news broke 75 minutes before kick-off at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Thursday, it showed manager Unai Emery’s thoughts and how important he attaches to Tottenham’s visit to Villa Park on Sunday. It was a big suggestion. Captain John McGinn, in-form forward Leon Bailey, and full-backs Matty Cash and Alex Moreno will start on the bench, while 20-year-old midfielder Tim Irogbunam will make his second start, almost two years after making his full debut. He participated. Spurs are five points behind fourth-placed Villa but with a game in hand, a home win would give them a welcome buffer between them and their closest challengers for Champions League qualification. It will be established. Villa came from behind to win in November with goals from Pau Torres and Ollie Watkins, and it would be valuable if they could repeat that.

Anyway, welcome! Now comes the fun part.
