Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” that some Republicans who blocked the bipartisan border bill killed Laken Riley “to score cheap political points.” He said he was “concerned” about the fact that the government had pointed out the issue.
Anchor Jake Tapper said, “A terrible tragedy has occurred in your state. You don’t need me to tell you this, but 22-year-old Augusta University nursing student Laken Riley was bludgeoned to death while running away on the UGA campus last month. Ta.” . The suspect was an illegal immigrant from Venezuela who was released after crossing the border illegally, but had a criminal record in New York and was still a free man. ”
He added, “At a rally last night, Trump met with the family of Laken Riley. He blamed Biden’s border policies for her death. The Riley family is your constituents. This. Isn’t it true that there was a policy failure that led to this tragic murder?”
Warnock said, “Listen, first of all, let me say that my heart goes out to this family of Laken Riley. As a pastor who has presided over funerals of all kinds, I can tell you that there is nothing sadder than when nature is tragically reversed and instead of children burying their parents, parents have to give birth to their children. . . So it’s unfortunate that in this moment of grief, there are people who are trying to score cheap political points. Borders must be secured. We know that.”
He added: “There’s agreement on that point, which is why we had a bipartisan bill before us just a few weeks ago, and there are people who have walked away from this bipartisan bill. “The fact is, or at least that there was a chance.” To discuss it, they are now using the death of a young woman to score political points, which is even worse about the politics of insanity. That’s what keeps people away from politics. I think we can do much better than that. We can secure our borders and we can ensure that we do everything we can to keep our children safe. ”
