Skier Madison Saltsburg dies after fall from New Hampshire’s Mount Washington

A 20-year-old skier died after falling 600 feet on Mount Washington on Sunday. Rescuers had to extract at least two other people from a New Hampshire mountain over the weekend because of stormy and icy conditions.

NBC affiliate Madison Saltsberg dies after sliding down Tuckerman Canyon, a vertical glacier slope on the southeast face of towering New England Peak. WBTS-TV News reported.

The fatal accident came a day after three people were stranded on the mountain, two with non-life-threatening injuries, forcing authorities to carry out rescue efforts.

“Snow rangers and emergency personnel were on scene late last night,” U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Colleen Mainville told news outlets Sunday.

Snow and strong winds hampered rescue efforts, with about a foot of snow expected.

Mount Washington, the highest mountain in the Northeast, is popular with backcountry skiers, but is well known for its rapidly and unpredictably changing weather and frequent rescue needs.

Last week, a hiker from Kentucky hit his head during a fall, suffered hypothermia and had to be rescued from another part of the mountain, according to WBTS.

Joabe Barbosa, 23, fell off a trail in Ammonusuk Gorge around 6:45 p.m. Thursday, hitting his head and face and losing one of his sneakers.

Barbosa managed to call 911 and was rescued from the mountain pass, about 3,600 feet above sea level.

It took rescuers four hours to get the hiker off the mountain and transport him to Littleton Regional Medical Center, but New Hampshire Fish and Game officials said the hiker had not properly prepared for the hike. reported.
