A plane crash in Bath County, Virginia, Sunday afternoon claimed the lives of five people, including four adults and one child, police said.

WXFR in Roanoke, Virginia, reported that the crash occurred at Ingalls Field Airport in Bath County around 3 p.m. Sunday.

Bath County Airport Authority Chairman Jeff Ford told the agency that the twin-engine plane had been informed that it had to make an emergency landing shortly before the crash.

The nature of the emergency is unknown, authorities said, adding that the plane was not based at Ingalls Field Airport.

Virginia State Police told Fox News Digital that five people, one child and four adults, were killed in the crash.
