Washington Monument closes due to strong winds

The National Park Service (NPS) announced on social media that the Washington Monument was closed Sunday due to high winds.

NPS later clarified that while the monument itself is not in danger, it will be closed to prevent visitors from waiting in long lines in this weather.

“That’s right. The monument is not in any danger,” NPS wrote on X (formerly Twitter) in response to a question from user X. “However, it is against our operating policy to have people queue at the entrance door during high wind conditions.”

a Wind advisory Winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph were announced Sunday in the Washington area.

This is not the first time the monument has had to be closed due to bad weather.

In 2021, thunderstorms struck the region, striking the Washington Monument and damaging power systems.
