1. Based on the story of a real hero

The world of entertainment is full of mythical superheroes. But Francis Cabrini was a real person. Born near Milan, Italy, on July 15, 1850, she and seven other women founded a ministry for the poor in 1880, after which she hoped to commission a mission to China. He had an audience with Pope Leo XIII. However, the Pope sent her to the United States. In New York, she started an orphanage, school, and hospital. Soon she was receiving requests from all over the world.

As the film tells it, she launched an “empire of hope” and established hundreds of hospitals, orphanages, schools, and relief centers around the world. “It was the greatest philanthropic empire the world has ever known,” the film says.

Cabrini was a Catholic, but he lived a life that holds lessons for all of us, Catholics and non-Catholics alike.

2. A lot of money went into it and it looks great on the big screen.

From the opening scene, you can tell that this is not your typical low-budget faith film.

Each costume looks as if it has been teleported from another era. The same goes for every building. The setting is 1900s New York City, with its rat-infested alleyways and smog-filled skyline. A great cast carries it from there.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the film’s budget was $50 million, a far cry from the Marvel or Star Wars films, but light years beyond the budgets of most faith-based films. Businessman J. Eustace Wolfington helped organize the funding. He previously served as a producer bella (2006) and sound of freedom (2023).

Emmy Award Nominee David Morse (green mile, heart lockerThe director, who played Archbishop Michael Corrigan in the film, said he was surprised by the “world” the filmmakers had created.

Morse told Crosswalk he was “very grateful and admired” Wolfington. ”[He] “If we’re going to do this, we’re going to do it right and we’re going to spend the money.” And you see that when you watch the movie. That’s almost unheard of for an independent film…it’s really amazing. ”

Oscar nominee John Lithgow (crown) plays the mayor of New York City, played by Christiana Delanna (tuscany) plays Cabrini.

3. Encourages us to live like Christ

It’s easy to be inspired by Mother Cabrini’s story. She sees a prostitute on the streets of New York and takes her in. She finds her boy in a dirty alley and invites him to be sheltered in her own orphanage. She hears racist slurs and hateful comments – “You should send them all back,” one man audibly says – and yet she turns the other cheek. I chose not to react. When the orphanage reaches capacity, she raises money to build a new one. She raised money to build a hospital because she learned that many immigrants lack access to health care. When she learns that she has tuberculosis and that she only has a few years to live, she moves on.

“You will have plenty of time to rest in heaven,” she tells the archbishop. Her goal was to see the world as Jesus saw it.

“Her life was like the ultimate prayer,” director Alejandro Monteverde told Crosswalk. “She didn’t care what people believed. She cared about people.”

Cabrini’s life teaches us to “love more and judge less,” he added.
