Players Championship Preview:
Ten of the top 12 players in the Official World Golf Ranking will be competing this week in Florida looking for a big win. Known as his unofficial fifth major due to the impressive field, this week does not disappoint.
Following his overwhelming performance at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will aim for back-to-back races at TPC Sawgrass.
Switching putters ahead of Bay Hill paid off in a big way, as he made 16 of 16 putts from inside 15 feet on Sunday alone.
Schaeffler is Odds-on favorites +500 per DraftKings. Will he be able to defend his title and fight off the others, or will someone else usurp his throne?
Rory McIlroy, who came in at +1200 odds, may have been another blowout on Sunday in Orlando, but don’t count him out at The Players. He is one of the best drivers on Tour right now and that will help him tackle this track.
Staying on the fairway is a must at TPC Sawgrass, so if McIlroy can put it all together he could win another Goldman Trophy.
Also participating are Xander Schauffele, Viktor Hovland, Justin Thomas and Will Zalatoris. Hovland didn’t do much at Bay Hill last week, but he likes TPC Sawgrass. He finished T9 in 2022 and T3 last year, so it might be time for him to win his first event in 2024.
Thomas and Zalatoris played very well in Orlando, but couldn’t keep up with Scheffler.
Other players who could surprise people this week include Ludwig Oberg, Patrick Cantlay, Max Homa and Shane Lowry.
