Billionaire Elon Musk said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that Democratic politicians tolerate illegal immigration for the purpose of building and consolidating political power through the Congressional apportionment process.
Musk said that Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.) appeared on FOX Business Network’s “Morning with Maria” and that Democrats say “these illegal immigrants will create more voting rights in blue states. I hope so.” There are an estimated 10 million illegal immigrants in the country, which is the equivalent of 13 U.S. House districts, depending on how they are allocated.
“More presidential and House electoral votes will be allocated to Mr. Biden’s new illegal aliens than the population of 40 U.S. states,” Musk wrote. “Let that sink in.”
“The increase in illegal aliens will increase Democratic voting power and will recruit more Democrats. ) If they win, they will grant citizenship to all illegal aliens and America will become a permanent one-party deep socialist state,” Musk added in a follow-up post. Replies pointing to this dynamic give Democrats an incentive to allow illegal immigration.
Undocumented immigrants are prohibited by law from voting in federal elections, which limits their ability to participate.
But Musk pointed out that the Congressional reapportionment process gives states with larger populations of illegal immigrants more influence in the House of Representatives and the Electoral College.
The decennial Congressional reapportionment process occurs after the Census and redraws the 435 seats in the House of Representatives, so it calculates not only the number of Americans living in an area but also all future electoral districts. It is done based on population.
As of 2023, each congressional district averaged approximately 761,000 voters.
Musk, who is originally from South Africa and legally immigrated to the United States from Canada, has been vocal in recent months about his opposition to illegal immigration.
Last week, Musk took issue with media reports criticizing Mr. X for being against immigrants and immigration in general.
“The media often characterizes me as ‘anti-immigrant’ because I have expressed concern about unvetted illegal immigrants overwhelming American cities. As an immigrant myself, nothing could be further from the truth,” Musk wrote. “I am all for increasing and expediting legal immigration for all talented, hard-working, and honest people.”
“Entering the United States legally is extraordinarily difficult and painfully slow, but entering illegally is easy and quick! This clearly makes no sense,” he added.
Mr. Hagerty recently introduced an amendment to the $460 billion spending package considered by the Senate that would allow the Census Bureau to include a citizenship question in future censuses and count non-U.S. citizens in congressional districts. would be prohibited. and the apportionment of the Electoral College.
The amendment was defeated by a 51-45 vote, with all senators from the Democratic caucus voting against the bill.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), who opposes the amendment, also participated.
Border security and illegal immigration have emerged as one of the key issues for voters heading into the 2024 election.
A Fox News poll conducted at the end of February found that the economy was the top issue for 37% of voters, followed by immigration at 21%, with abortion being the only other issue to reach double digits. It was 10%.
A Fox News analysis in late February found that nearly 7.3 million immigrants have illegally crossed the Southwest border since President Joe Biden took office.
This number is larger than the population of 36 individual states.
This total does not include an estimated additional 1.8 million known “fugitives” who evaded arrest by law enforcement after entering the country.
