Davison vs. Fordham Prediction

(11:30 a.m. ET, ESPN+)

The Davidson, N.C., Wildcats had an emotional March Madness run with Cinderella running behind Stephen Curry.

But these Wildcats are nothing like that team.

The Wildcats improved to 10-3 in non-conference play with the win over Maryland, then went 5-13 in A-10 play, ending the year with five straight losses and earning the 13th seed in the conference tournament. It became.

David Skogman’s injury took a toll on the Wildcats. He was the team’s leading scorer (13.5 points per game), but missed the final 12 games of the season. The Wildcats only won three of those games.

Davidson is 7 points per 100 possessions worse offensively with Skogman off the floor, shoots 6% worse from deep, and his 47% 3-point shooting clip sometimes carries the Wildcats. did.

But this year, the Wildcats swept Fordham, defeating the Rams without Skogman in their second meeting.

All in all, I don’t like this matchup against Fordham. Fordham posted a similarly poor conference record of 6-12 en route to the 12th seed in the A-10 tournament.

The Rams run a perimeter-oriented isolation offense, with Kyle Rose, Japhet Meador and Will Richardson all shooting off-the-dribble 3s. They rank second in the A-10 in 3-point percentage.

However, the Rams shot 32% from deep in conference play and hardly made anything. They are producing a lot of open jumpers (first in the league in open 3 rate), but lack the shot makers to capitalize on them (last in ShotQuality’s shot-making metric).

And I don’t think Fordham will have an easy shot against Davidson’s defense. Davidson allows a lot of 3-pointers (11th in A-10 in 3-point percentage allowed) but shuts them all out (1st in 3-point percentage allowed).

It unfolded in two head-to-head games, with the Rams shooting 13-of-3 (24%).

On the other side of the court, Fordham effectively blocks 3-point shots (1st in the A-10 in 3-point percentage allowed) by overplaying perimeter ball handlers and wing shooters in drop coverage. Running defense. , focuses them on the midrange.

However, the Rams were unable to prevent rim runners, ranking in the 7th percentile of DI teams in at-the-rim field goals made per game (21) and tied for the A-10th in paint points per game. It is ranked fourth from the bottom. Games are allowed (33).

Fordham has been solid in rim defense per possession, but it hasn’t been enough to stop Davidson’s rim-based attacks in two games. Davidson ranks in the top 70 in the nation in at-the-rim field goals made per game (25), and the Wildcats scored a total of 66 paint points in the two head-to-head games against the Rams.

It was a bad matchup for Fordham, and that should factor into the finals. Our Action PRO model projects the Wildcats to be his 5.5-point neutral-court favorites against the Rams, and I agree with that calculation.

Louisville vs. NC State Predictions

(4:30 p.m. ET, ACC Network)

The Wolfpack got off to a very promising start to the year, jumping to a 7-4 conference record.

However, they fell apart, losing seven of nine games and falling to the 10th seed in the ACC Tournament.

Fortunately, the Wolfpack will face a lackluster Louisville Cardinals in the first round. The Cardinals have one win on the road this year.

Louisville managed to maintain a close lead against the Pack at Kentucky earlier this season, but lost by six points to 7.5 points. But the Cardinals needed a rare 3-point shooting performance of 8-of-15 (53%) to keep it close.

Without a repeatable performance (which is highly unlikely for a team that shoots 30% from 3-point range), the Cardinals won’t have a good matchup against the Wolfpack.

Louisville utilizes five double-digit scorers in these sets with an isolation and post-heavy offense.

However, the Wolfpack played well-above-average defense against both sets, ranking in the top 60 nationally in isolation allowed PPP (0.78) and post-up allowed PPP (0.77). At 6-foot-9 and 275 pounds, it’s pretty tough to get past DJ Barnes at the rim.

In the first matchup, Louisville scored a total of 13 points on 15 isolation and post-up sets for a pedestrian 0.87 PPP.

On the other hand, North Carolina State also runs a post-up heavy offense behind Barnes and is almost unstoppable with a low block.

He’s too big and his footwork is too clever.

Additionally, the Wolfpack relies heavily on quick-moving point guard DJ Horn in pick-and-roll sets. They aren’t very efficient in this set, but that might not be an issue against Louisville.

Louisville ranks 229th nationally in post-up allowed PPP (0.81) and 349th in at-the-rim allowed PPP (1.21), a death sentence for Barnes. The Cardinals rank 358th in pick-and-roll PPP allowed (1.05), giving Horn a death sentence.

In their first matchup, Horn and Burns combined for 40 points on 9-of-15 2-point shooting (60%). The Cardinals scored a total of 43 points on 37 sets of post-ups and pick-and-rolls, good for a PPP of 1.16.

Again, the Cardinals were held within single digits in the first matchup, but that was thanks to an unsustainable shooting performance at home.

The Wolfpack should aim for a dominant double-digit victory in the rematch on a neutral court with typical shooting splits.
