Tyson Foods pork plant in Iowa to close for good

Tyson Foods announced Monday that it will close its pork plant in Iowa, impacting more than 1,000 jobs.

Employees at the Perry facility officially learned of the closure plan on Monday, the Des Moines Register reported. The factory reportedly has more than 1,200 employees.

“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to permanently close our pork plant in Perry, Iowa,” a Tyson Foods spokesperson confirmed to FOX Business on Tuesday.

A spokesperson said the closure of the Perry pork plant “underscores our focus on optimizing operational efficiency to best serve our customers.”

Tyson Foods indicated six chicken processing facilities will permanently close in 2023, and more recently two of its “ready-ready value-add” beef plants, according to the company’s first-quarter earnings report. added to the closed list. Perry Mayor Dirk Kavanaugh told Reuters the plant is scheduled to close on June 28.

“This is a huge blow to the community,” he told the outlet. “They’re the biggest employer in the area. It’s hard to imagine what we would do without them.”

Other facilities in Iowa employ more than 9,000 people. The company reported at the end of September that it had a total of 139,000 employees, including 114,000 employees at “non-corporate locations” across the United States.

A Tyson Foods spokesperson told FOX Business, “Caring for our team members is our top priority and we encourage them to apply for other open positions within the company.” . “We are also working closely with state and local officials to provide additional resources to those affected.”

In the first quarter of fiscal 2024, Tyson Foods saw some improvement in its pork division.
