The bill passed 352-65 with one abstention.
Both Democrats and Republicans supported the bill, which passed out of committee on a unanimous 50-0 bipartisan vote. This is a rare example of bipartisan unity in a deeply divided political environment.
The bill, sponsored by House China Select Committee Chairman Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) and ranking member Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.), would allow parent company ByteDance to TikTok will be blocked in the US if it does not withdraw from the US. 165 days have passed. It would also require purchases by countries that are not adversaries of the United States.
Opponents of the bill, mostly Democrats, expressed concerns about free speech issues. Some Republicans opposed the proposal, saying it would expand government control over businesses and could be misused.
TikTok has released a beta version of its Series and Creativity program that incentivizes creators to submit one-minute videos by only monetizing content that meets length requirements. (St. Petersburg)
