Late Thursday morning, multiple oil tanks caught fire at a quarry in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., sending thick black smoke into the air that could be seen for miles.
Montgomery County Fire Rescue spokesman Pete Pillinger said at a 2 p.m. news conference that three tanks remained burning, but the fire was contained by early afternoon. Officials said no injuries were reported.

The cause is not yet known.
Although crews cannot use water to extinguish the fire due to the nature of the fire, Pillinger said there is no shortage of suitable chemicals.
Pillinger said since the fire was extinguished, officials have focused on monitoring air quality in communities near the Rockville industrial site. He said there was no serious health risk, but residents in these areas should limit their time outdoors and close windows if possible.
Pillinger said state environmental officials were on scene and all workers were evacuated from the immediate area of the fire.
