The Giants brought home a homegrown product Friday, agreeing to a deal with Bronx-raised tight end Chris Manhertz.
Manhertz, 31, is a nine-year NFL veteran with an unusual resume. He played Cardinal basketball at his Spelman High School and also played basketball at Canisius College.
He then took up football, building a career as a blocking tight end for the Saints, Panthers and Jaguars, and last season with the Broncos.
In 120 NFL games (53 starts), Manhertz has 26 receptions for 271 yards and two touchdowns.
He has been surprisingly durable, appearing in at least 15 games over the past seven seasons.
He was released by the Broncos earlier this week.
Manhertz signed a one-year, veteran-minimum contract for $1.2 million.
This is the second tight end the Giants have signed this week, following the signing of Jack Stoll (26) on Thursday.

Stoll played the past three years with the Eagles, collecting 20 receptions for 183 yards. The Giants also re-signed tight end Lawrence Cager this week.
After a hot start to free agency, the Giants are currently filling out the back end of their roster. They don’t know the status of starting tight end Darren Waller as he is considering retirement.
Daniel Bellinger, currently in his third year with the team, will likely start at this position.
