ATHENS, Greece (AP) – A police officer on patrol in northwestern Greece was arrested Friday on drug charges after he allegedly used a service car to smuggle marijuana, authorities said.
The suspect was arrested in the port city of Igoumenitsa after a road chase, along with an Albanian man who was found in an unmarked police vehicle.
A search of the vehicle revealed 102 kilograms (225 pounds) of marijuana, police said.
According to the statement, the detained officer ignored his colleagues’ commands to stop for a search and fled at high speed, but stopped after losing control and colliding with a parked vehicle.
Police also arrested a second officer who was on patrol duty with the suspect on Friday, but was allegedly found at a coffee shop about 20 kilometers away.
All three suspects were charged with drug-related charges.
The Igoumenitsa region is close to the border with Albania, across which large quantities of marijuana are smuggled into Greece.
