Mr. Trump and his team are required to post the full amount of bail by next week to prevent it from being collected pending appeal by New York Attorney General Letitia James, D.N.Y.
Meanwhile, Trump’s lawyers asked the appeals court on Monday to intervene, saying they had not been successful in obtaining bail.
In a court filing Monday, lawyers for the 2024 Republican candidate petitioned an intermediate state appellate court to delay enforcement of the ruling, calling the amount absurd and excessive.
“Due to the defendants’ continued and diligent efforts, bail for the full sentence has proven to be ‘practically impossible,'” the filing states. “These intense efforts include approaching approximately 30 surety companies through four separate brokers.”
“Forcing an impossible bail requirement as a condition of appeal would clearly cause irreparable injury to the defendant,” Trump’s lawyers said.
The lawyers also asked whether Mr. Trump could instead be allowed to post bail at $100 million while he appeals the sentence. However, if Trump loses his appeal and is unable to pay, the bonding company will be required to pay.
President Trump has categorically denied any wrongdoing in the case brought by Manhattan Attorney General Letitia James.
