Authorities say an intruder broke into an apartment early Monday morning, assaulted a tenant, and then attempted to exit the unit and enter an attached dwelling. told Wood TV.
However, the homeowner shot and killed the intruder, authorities added to the police department.

The ordeal happened around 2 a.m. at a home on Chatterson Road between Apple Avenue and Hall Road, authorities told WOOD.
The department said initial calls indicated a man who appeared to be intoxicated was banging on the windows of an apartment adjacent to the home. Lt. Austin Armott of the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Department told the department that the man then entered the apartment and assaulted the tenant.
The sheriff’s office told Wood that the 38-year-old suspect left the apartment and tried to enter an attached home when the homeowner shot him, adding that the suspect died.
A woman who lives in the home told police she was inside the home with her boyfriend and two children when the home invasion and shooting occurred. She added to Wood that neither she, her children nor her boyfriend were injured.

Muskegon County Chief Prosecutor Tim Murt said it is too early to tell whether the law applies to the case, but his office will assist police as they continue their investigation. After the police hand over the case, the prosecutor’s office will decide whether to prosecute.
“As we continue our investigation, the timeline may mean that we simply need to finish the interview, type up the information and send it to the prosecutor’s office,” Aamodt added to WOOD. “I don’t have difficult dates, nothing like that. It could be a few days, it could be a week.”
