British government to host European leaders summit in July

• The gathering will involve leaders from around 50 countries and aims to foster cooperation on issues affecting Europe.

The UK government announced on Tuesday that the next meeting of the European Political Community will be held on July 18th.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will welcome leaders from around 50 countries to Blenheim Palace, an 18th-century mansion northwest of London that is the birthplace of wartime leader Winston Churchill.

Sunak said the gathering was “an important forum for Europe-wide cooperation on issues that affect us all and threaten our security and prosperity.” He said the agenda includes aiding Ukraine and “stopping the scourge of people smuggling and illegal immigration.”

The conference will be the fourth for the European Political Community, an initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron. It was established in 2022 after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine shattered Europe’s sense of security. Previous summit meetings were held in the Czech capital, Prague. Chisinau, Moldova. and Granada, Spain.

The forum will give the UK an opportunity to participate in a pan-European political gathering despite its exit from the European Union in 2020.
