The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a warning Monday amid an increase in measles cases both globally and domestically.
The warning is of the title “Increasing global and domestic measles cases and outbreaks: Ensure that children in the United States and children 6 months of age and older who travel internationally receive MMR vaccination.” It targets doctors and notes that the disease is “highly contagious.” In the past three months alone, from January 1 to March 14, there were 58 confirmed measles cases in the United States, according to the federal health agency.
This includes “seven outbreaks in seven jurisdictions, compared to a total of 58 cases and four outbreaks reported for all of 2023.” Additionally, it noted that the majority of cases (93%) are associated with international travel. After all, the CDC is pushing for expanded MMR vaccination.
The CDC continued:
Most of the cases reported in 2024 were in children 12 months and older who had not received the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Many countries are experiencing measles outbreaks, including travel destinations such as Austria, the Philippines, Romania, and the United Kingdom. To prevent measles infection and reduce the risk of imported community transmission, all U.S. residents traveling internationally should be up to date with MMR vaccination, regardless of destination. Health care providers should ensure that children have received routine immunizations that include MMR. Immunity to measles is currently high in most parts of the United States, so the risk of large-scale spread is low. However, there are some areas with low coverage, which puts some communities at higher risk of outbreaks.
The warning comes amid a surge in measles cases in Chicago, Illinois, some of which are linked to immigrant shelters. As Breitbart News reported:
Officials said the child of the illegal border crosser had been infected with a communicable disease, but the infection was not detected until after the child was no longer contagious. This means that all 1,876 migrants in the shelter were exposed to infectious diseases in the weeks before they crossed the border. The announcement was reported on Friday on NewsNation.
by city dashboard, There have been 15 measles cases among Chicagoans this year, two of them in the last week.
Dr. Olusimbo “Simbo” Ige, Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health Said They are “trying to reduce transmission by vaccinating as many people as possible.”
