Former San Francisco 49ers and Las Vegas Raiders starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to be the backup quarterback again in 2024.
However, Garoppolo will not be eligible to suit up for his new team, the Los Angeles Rams, at the start of the season.
The two-time Super Bowl champion will be suspended for two games for violating the league’s performance-enhancing substances policy.
Garoppolo revealed on Tuesday that he violated policy by mishandling the NFL’s therapeutic use exemption when he first joined the Raiders.

Garoppolo’s violations stemmed from his use of prescription drugs. ESPN reported in February that the veteran QB did not receive a therapeutic use exemption from the NFL at the time.
“It really messed up the TUE (therapeutic use exemption),” Garoppolo said. Players can be exempted from using certain substances that are prohibited by the league. Garoppolo has not appealed.

The 32-year-old signal-caller added that he’s “never been in a situation like this before,” but plans to “attack OTAs, attack training camp, and get through the first two games.” Ta. Garoppolo will be eligible to participate in training camp and all other aspects of the Rams’ offseason program.

However, once the regular season begins, Garoppolo will no longer be allowed to use the team site. Despite the difficult situation, Garoppolo seems determined to remain optimistic.
“Hopefully we can get the Dubs and start 2-0 and move things forward,” Garoppolo said. “But it’s just one of those situations. It’s what it is. We have to deal with it and keep moving forward.”

Garoppolo signed a three-year, $73.75 million contract with Las Vegas last year. He appeared in seven games during the 2023 season, throwing seven touchdowns and nine interceptions. He spent six years with the 49ers before joining the Raiders.
Garoppolo has never lost to the Rams in his career.

“I’ve played against them for years, so I knew how good this defense was and how the offense could score,” Garoppolo said. “It was a good situation. That was a big part of my decision. I just wanted to find a good situation, good people around me, and I think I found that here.”
