Congress races toward shutdown deadline: Live coverage

Congress is racing toward a Friday shutdown deadline and leaders are putting the finishing touches on a final funding package for fiscal year 2024, with an uncertain timeline for passing the bill.

Funding for the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense, Department of Labor, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Education, and Department of State. Internal Revenue Service; and general government and foreign operations could end as early as Saturday morning, giving lawmakers little time to get the package to President Biden’s desk.

House Republicans have called for at least 72 hours of bill review before a vote, but it’s unclear whether leadership will abide by that rule, and Senate proceedings could extend the deliberation process into the weekend.

The legal text of the six bills could be released on Wednesday.
