Late heroics propel Northwestern past Florida Atlantic in overtime

Ryan Langborg has that talent.

He was a key component in No. 15-seeded Princeton’s run to the Elite Eight last year, and his transfer to the Ivy League means No. 9 Northwestern will be a one-shot in Friday’s NCAA Tournament. There was no.

Starting with a quadruple header in Brooklyn, the 6-foot-4 guard dominated the overtime session after Brooks Bernhizer’s layup with nine seconds left forced the Wildcats into overtime.

Langborg scored 10 points in the final minutes to help the Wildcats defeat No. 8 Florida Atlantic 77-65.

The Owls, who were the Cinderella story of last year’s tournament, return home early. Most experts felt he was overseeded after failing to win the AAC Tournament.

Langborg scored 48 points in Princeton’s final two games of the tournament last year, and on Friday he scored a season-high 27 points and was the key to a dramatic victory.

He added four rebounds and three assists, making 11 of 19 from the field.

Bernheiser’s layup with nine seconds left tied the game at 58-all and sent it into overtime after Jonelle Davis’ 3-pointer was blocked by the horn.

The Wildcats will likely face No. 1 overall seed Connecticut State in the second round on Sunday.
