FOX News host and former Rep. Trey Gowdy (RS.C.) on Friday slammed House Republicans for ousting former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) in the fall of 2023.
“You and I won’t talk about it [House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.)]otherwise [Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.)] “With seven comrades determined to pursue fame and eliminate Kevin McCarthy,” Gordy told Fox News’ Rich Edison on “Special Report.” clip Highlighted by Mediaite.
“What did they get as a result? How was the house improved?” Gordy continued.
As the House prepares to adjourn, lawmakers may talk about the southern border, inflation and Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report on Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents, but no. , they’ll be talking about domestic battles. It won’t help them win the Senate in November, it won’t help them win the White House, and it won’t help expand Republican support in the House.” he added.
The Republican majority has already shrunk, and Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.), who previously said he would not seek reelection to his seat, announced he would leave the House in April. This leaves House Republicans with 217 votes and Democrats with 213, meaning Johnson only has one vote left to lose on legislation without Democratic support.
In early October 2023, following McCarthy’s decision to pass a Democratic-backed stopgap measure on the floor to avert a government shutdown, eight Republicans led by Gaetz joined House Democrats in voting to remove the former speaker. He was voted out of office.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) filed a motion to resign against Johnson on Friday, the same procedural move that led to McCarthy’s ouster. Greene’s motion opposed her support for a bipartisan spending deal passing Congress. Georgia Republicans said their vote to remove Johnson from office has not yet been triggered.
Greene told reporters on the steps of the Capitol that the move was “basically a warning.”
“And it’s time to go through a slow process and find a new Speaker of the House who will not be on the side of the Democrats, but on the side of the Republicans with the Republican majority,” Greene added.
