A South Carolina woman is recovering from a horrific blow dryer accident that left her hand so badly burned it had to be amputated.

Mary Wilson said she has a positive outlook on life after losing her hand and wrist in a freak accident on February 7, according to WCIV.

Wilson was doing daily chores and drying her hair before going to bed at her home on James Island, when she suddenly passed away while leaving the house, still clutching household appliances.

She fell to the floor and onto the dryer, but the device was still running on high power and burned her hand, causing third-degree burns.

Ms Wilson said she lay unconscious on the floor for about 20 minutes before her partner found her on top of a hair dryer.

“She’s telling me, ‘Your hands, your hands,'” Wilson told WCIV.

“When I look at my hand, I don’t even know that it’s part of me. It doesn’t even seem recognisable.”

Wilson was rushed to hospital, where doctors said her hand and wrist had to be amputated due to severe nerve damage caused by the heat from the hair dryer.

“The burns on my hands were third-degree burns that went all the way down to the bone,” Wilson said.

She said the blow dryer doesn’t have an auto-shutoff feature like other hot hair tools, and such a safety mechanism may have saved her hand.

“As is common with curling irons and curling irons, it has a ceramic plate that turns off when it reaches a certain temperature,” she says.

“If that were the case, my injuries might not have been so bad.”

It is unclear what caused Wilson to lose consciousness, but she believes she was knocked unconscious by the impact of the instrument.

Wilson said she had to give up her job as a dog groomer and doesn’t know if she’ll be able to return to that job in the future.

“I really miss it, I miss the dogs, I miss the clients,” Wilson said.

“I realized in a really objective way that all the other issues that I was dealing with in my life six months ago are not as important to what I have to go through now and the challenges that I have to overcome. “I can now see ‘into the future,'” she told WCIV.

“I’m still going to live my life to the fullest. It’s just a hand. 10% of my body, what is this? Losing a hand might be something that changes me, but… I don’t mean that to define me, ‘talk to me about everything,”’ Wilson told the outlet.

Wilson said local restaurant Bohemian Bull will donate profits from an upcoming cornhole tournament to support her recovery efforts.

She said she has received a lot of support on her road to recovery, calling it “incredible.”

“It was support that I didn’t even know I was receiving and it definitely meant a lot,” she told 15 News.
