‘Laugh at you when you’re sad’

The knot was tied, and his tongue was tied.

A British groom left his bride blushing for another reason after he mistakenly told her he would “laugh” when she was “sad”, as seen in a hysterical video.

“This is a moment no one can forget or be depressed about,” Robert Thomson, 36, told SWNS of the “memorable” marital breakup.

“I definitely saw an interesting side to it,” said Thomson, 36. Amy Thomson / SWNS

The gaffe happened last year as the construction worker and his bride-to-be, Amy, were celebrating their big day in his hometown of Essex in April last year.

“It was a beautiful day,” exclaimed Thomson, recalling the joyous event.

However, when the lovers went up to the altar and recited their vows, things took a turn for the worse.

“I call upon all of you here to testify that I, Robert James Thompson, take you as my lawful wife, Amy Susan Sheila Jacqueline Aldon,” he said, repeating the priest’s signal. He said. “In taking you as my wife, I vow to love you, respect you, and honor you.”

Thomson then stalled for a bit, but pulled himself together and continued on, before making the long-standing marriage debacle.

“I stand by your side and am faithful to your will,” the groom declared. “I’ll take care of you, I’ll laugh at you when you’re happy, I’ll laugh at you when you’re sad.”

Thomson realizes that he has made a grave mistake, and his gaffe leaves the wedding attendees, including Amy, in hysterics. When the laughter died down, the red-faced carpenter put his hand on the other shoulder and said the correct line: “When you’re sad, I’ll comfort you.”

The Brit chalked up the gaffe as being extra nervous because Amy was “45 minutes late”.

Thankfully, the newlyweds believe the gaffe was quite humorous in hindsight. “I saw the funny side of it,” Thomson said. “And our family and friends definitely got the fun side of it too!”

“I don’t think he realized it until he had a reaction,” the bride said. “We will never forget it.”

In a more sordid and less glamorous example of wedding vows gone awry, a Florida groom was shamed online after promising to “slap” his partner’s “a-” every chance he got. Ta.
