Charles Barkley didn’t mince words when describing the Antelopes’ loss to Alabama on Sunday in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

Alabama won the game 72-61 and moved on to face North Carolina in the Sweet 16. Grand Canyon defeated St. Mary’s to advance to the last 32, but expectations for a Cinderella-like performance fell short.

Barkley doesn’t seem impressed with how the Antelopes played against the Crimson Tide.

“Grand Canyon, that was the stupidest basketball game I’ve ever seen,” he said on the postgame broadcast. “Everyone went one-on-one. How many free throws did they miss? … I don’t know what they were doing offensively. I don’t think they made plays the whole second half.”

“That was some of the dumbest basketball decisions I’ve ever seen in adult college basketball. …That was some of the worst basketball decisions a college team would ever make. did.”

Clark Kellogg, Berkeley’s co-analyst, said he was even “baffled” by the decision.

“They just went one-on-one every time. They didn’t make any plays,” Barkley added.

Grand Canyon was 32.1% from the floor and 23-of-37 from the foul line. They missed 14 foul shots and lost by 11 points. The Antelopes had just five assists the entire game.

Grand Canyon coach Bryce Drew added that the rebounding game also hurt the team. Alabama had 20 offensive rebounds compared to 15 for the Antelopes.

“Despite our shots, we had the most offensive rebounds. That was probably the biggest difference in the game,” he said. “If we can rebound, I think the last five minutes will be different.”
