The incident occurred Sunday around 7:25 p.m. after the girl’s adoptive parents called authorities to their home and said the girl was suffering from a mental health crisis. By the time her deputy arrived, the girl was gone. The department did not provide footage of the incident or specific information about whether the girl fired the gun intentionally or accidentally. A struggle ensued and “during the struggle, the boy sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” according to the press release.

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name and her age were not released. Detectives are investigating the shooting.
