A snowstorm is expected to blanket much of the Plains and the upper Midwest with up to a foot of snow Sunday through Monday as an unseasonable weather system moves east across the country. Meanwhile, severe thunderstorms could produce tornadoes along the Gulf Coast on Monday.
Blizzard warnings are in effect for Monday from South Dakota to Kansas as the front moves slowly, with a chance of whiteout and winds reaching 55 mph, and winter weather warnings are in place from the Texas Panhandle. It spread to the Canadian border in Minnesota.
Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport set a new single-day snow record by just over 8 inches on Sunday, with more than a foot of snow already in the northern part of the state.
Forecasters warned of dangerous road conditions, possible power outages and tree damage from snowfall. The weather is expected to improve slightly on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Temperatures are dropping as the winter front moves east. East of the weather front, it’s 55 degrees in Chicago, while in the Dakotas he’s a cold 25 degrees.
Tornado warnings were also in effect for much of Louisiana by Monday afternoon, and severe weather was expected to hit Mississippi and Alabama into Tuesday.
The National Weather Service also warned that heavy rain could fall across the Mid-Atlantic coast and into Southern California and central Arizona on Wednesday.
