Around 1:30 a.m. last night, a cargo ship leaving the Port of Baltimore reportedly lost power and crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Upon impact, the structure quickly collapsed into the murky waters below. Fortunately, most of the traffic stopped before the accident, but a few cars and a few contractors working on the bridge repairs were not so lucky. Some people have been rescued, but others are missing.
As with any unexpected tragedy, people want to know, “Was this really an accident?” Or is something more sinister going on?
Glenn Beck invites former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Monica Crowley to discuss the case.
“There’s a very active search and rescue going on,” Monica tells Glenn. “The Coast Guard is there. The National Transportation Safety Board is on scene. The Navy is there.”
She explains that at this point “it appears to be an accident” but it is important to “wait for the investigation” before reaching any specific conclusions.
Given that this disaster was due to a suspected power outage, many people, including Glenn, can’t help but think of the possibility of an “attack on electronic equipment.”
“I think so too, Glenn,” Monica says. “There is one report this morning indicating that the crew notified the Maryland Department of Transportation that they had lost control of the vessel upon departure.”
These reports have since been confirmed.crew was They were able to report the power problem to the authorities, which stopped traffic seconds before the collision and likely saved many lives.
In any case, “most of these vessels, like some of our voting systems, are under electronic control and are very likely vulnerable to hacking by nefarious players.” While Monica explains the accident, she also admits that the incident may have been nothing more than a horrific incident.
“Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar,” she says hopefully.
“I hope so,” Glenn says. “But we are all on high alert as any cyber terrorism is anticipated.”
