Ship that obliterated Baltimore bridge was involved in a previous collision; managed by DEI-captive company

Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge is apparently not the first structure Dali has left his mark on in recent years. The Singapore-flagged container ship that destroyed a bridge in the mid-Atlantic on Tuesday morning, effectively shutting down the second-busiest port, had a previous accident at a Belgian port.

Dali is a 984-foot vessel owned and managed by Grace Ocean Private Limited.
DEI captive Synergy Marine Group collided with a stone pier in the port of Antwerp on July 11, 2016 during an unmooring operation.

The accident reportedly occurred on a clear, sunny day and resulted in significant damage to the stern and transom.

However, the ship is said to have lost power while traveling at what Maryland Governor Wes Moore suggested was “a very high speed.” The pilots alerted the authorities, but they apparently were unable to stop the ship from proceeding.

Blaze News previously reported that Baltimore Police Chief Richard Worley claimed there was “no indication at all” that Dali intentionally ran into the bridge.

FBI Baltimore Field Office shown A few hours after the incident, a statement was released saying, “At this time, there is no concrete and reliable information suggesting a connection to terrorism.”

The Dali “lost propulsion” while leaving port, and the pilot alerted authorities that the ship was out of control, according to a declassified report by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.

At 1:28 a.m., a container ship with its lights out ran aground on the pier supporting the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The 2.6-mile bridge spanning the Patapsco River quickly collapsed.

Several vehicles on the bridge at the time of the collision plunged into the frigid water below. Two people were rescued, one of them in critical condition. At the time of publication, six people were still missing.

The ship’s crew, all Indians, survived.

Synergy Marine Group, the company charged with managing the ship, appears to have priorities other than avoiding collisions with critical infrastructure.
