Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) on Tuesday criticized former President Trump for launching an initiative to sell Bibles and encourage people to read what the Bible says about adultery.
“Happy Holy Week, Donald. Maybe you should buy the Bible instead of selling it,” Cheney wrote. Post to Xpreviously on Twitter, in response to a screen capture of Trump’s Bible pitch on Truth Social.
“Read it, including Exodus 20:14,” Cheney added, referring to the scripture that commands “thou shalt not commit adultery.”
In his latest fundraising effort, President Trump is touting a partnership with country musician Lee Greenwood to sell “God Bless USA” Bibles ahead of Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
President Trump said in a Truth Social video on Tuesday that he believes it is important for all Americans to have a Bible in their home.
“This is my favorite book,” President Trump said at another point, “I’m proud to support this Bible and encourage you to get it. We must make America pray again. .”
“The biggest thing that’s missing in this country is religion and Christianity. And I truly believe that we need to have them back, and we need to bring them back soon,” President Trump said. “I think this is one of the biggest problems we have. That’s why our country is in chaos. We’ve lost religion in our country.”
The $60 King James Bible includes lyrics to Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA,” as well as the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence, Pledge of Allegiance and more.
President Trump has been embroiled in a number of scandals related to extramarital affairs. In January, a jury ordered Trump to pay $83.3 million to longtime Elle columnist Jean Carroll for defaming her in 2019 by denying her sexual assault claims. A previous jury had found Trump responsible for sexually abusing her in the mid-1990s. , when Trump was married to Marla Maples.
Trump is also scheduled to face his first criminal trial in New York next month, with jury selection set for April 15. Trump is charged with 34 counts of falsifying his business records over the repayment of adult fees to his then-fixer Michael Cohen. Movie actress Stormy Daniels was paid $130,000 to keep her quiet about her alleged affair with Trump just before the 2016 election. The affair is said to have happened in 2006, after Trump married his third and current wife, Melania Trump.
Mr. Trump has maintained his innocence in the case. He has admitted to paying the bills but denies that he had an affair.
