Kentucky has decided on a head coaching position for the 2024-25 season, which will remain the same.
Coach John Calipari plans to return to Kentucky next year, despite rumors that the school might buy out his contract. Athletic director Mitch Barnhart acknowledged Tuesday night on X..
“As we always do at the end of each season, Coach Calipari and I have been discussing the direction of the men’s basketball program and can confirm that he will be returning for his 16th season as head coach.” Barnhart wrote in the post. .
The decision comes on the heels of third-seeded Kentucky’s disappointing 80-76 loss to No. 14-seeded Oakland State in March Madness, resulting in a disappointing first-round exit.
The Courier Journal reported. If the school had fired him without cause and bought out his contract, Calipari would have been owed about $35 million.
But that won’t happen, as the legendary coach returns and hopes to lead Kentucky to a season that bounces back from a tough end to the 2023-24 season.
