Giants’ Brian Daboll excited to evaluate QBs at upcoming Pro Days

ORLANDO, Fla. — Brian Daboll is currently on the road attending the NFL’s annual league meeting and plans to remain on the road this week.

“We’re going to have a pro day here soon,” he said Tuesday.

Well, you don’t need a high-tech navigation system to find where Daboll and the Giants’ best talent evaluators are likely to go.

LSU’s pro day will be held in Baton Rouge on Wednesday, and North Carolina will have its pro day in Chapel Hill on Thursday.

LSU’s workout will feature Jayden Daniels and North Carolina’s Drake Maye.

Thursday is also Washington and Michael Penix day. Junior from Seattle.

The Giants continue to search for a quarterback.

Coincidentally, two of the same pro days will also include wide receiver research. LSU features Malik Nabors, Daniels’ target, and Washington features Roma Odunze, Penix’s target.

Both players are among the top wide receiver options in the draft and could be the Giants’ No. 6 option.

“There’s no exact scientific explanation for it,” Daboll said. “Obviously not. You do the best job you can. I love doing that. I love evaluating quarterbacks. I love meeting quarterbacks. Together. It’s a great position to work in and a really fun position to evaluate.”

This is a role Daboll has held with several different teams over the years, either as a quarterback coach or offensive coordinator.

During this period, his scope as a head coach expanded further.

However, his specialty is quarterback, and the Giants are in the market this cycle.

They have the No. 6 pick in next month’s NFL Draft.

The last time they drafted a 6-year-old was in 2019, when they took Daniel Jones. They may choose his successor this time.

Quarterback rating is an annual obligation, regardless of whether a team has a bona fide starter at the position.

It is essential to meet these players and get a feel for them because they could be free in a few years and the more you know about them the better.

“You never know when they’ll be available,” Daboll said. “That’s a very premium position, isn’t it?”

right.

As always, Daboll didn’t let the names of draftees slip out of his mouth.

Asked about meeting with Michigan’s JJ McCarthy at the Giants’ facility, Daboll said, “At this point, I’m not going to go into detail with any specific person involved in the draft.”

He wouldn’t say whether his opinion of Jones has changed after last season’s poor performance and Jones’ repeated injuries, and he also didn’t mention the starting quarterback by name.

“Nobody did enough last year and it starts with me,” Daboll said.

Regarding the quarterback lineup in this year’s draft, Daboll said: There are some good ones too. In many places. ”

Daboll spent a lot of time with the Patriots and owns five Super Bowl rings, helped in large part by the presence of New England’s Tom Brady.

And, of course, Brady was a sixth-round draft pick. History shows that more than half of the top quarterbacks in this class are likely to fail.

Or become a bust.

Despite meetings and analysis, film study and scouting, identifying the next great quarterback remains an often fruitless journey in the NFL.

“Evaluation takes a long time,” Daboll said. “You have to put a lot of effort into that. It’s an all-encompassing process, rather than looking at it piecemeal. I’ve coached quarterbacks, been a coordinator, been a head coach. , I’ve done it every year. This is no different, but it takes time. I love doing this job, because again, two years from now, three years from now, no matter when, Because you never know if the quarterbacks are going to be there.”

Daboll added James Ferentz to his staff as assistant offensive line coach, replacing Chris Smith (who left to become offensive line coach at James Madison).

Ferentz, 34, played for the Broncos and spent the past seven years with the Patriots, recently announcing his retirement.

He is the son of longtime Iowa State head coach Kirk Ferentz.

Lions manager Dan Campbell said the team could travel to New Jersey this summer and hold joint practices at the Giants’ facility.

Last year, the Giants played the Lions for two days in Allen Park, Michigan.

The NFL is investigating whether there was any wrongdoing before the Eagles signed Saquon Barkley, but Commissioner Roger Goodell did not have an update Tuesday.

“I’m sure they’re making progress,” he said. “They were immediately engaged.”

The league is also investigating whether the Falcons committed any wrongdoing before signing Kirk Cousins.
