U.S. Representative Becca Balint, Vermont’s first woman and first openly gay member of Congress, announced Wednesday that she will run for a second term.
Balint, a Democrat, told Congress he has focused on making affordable housing more accessible, providing mental health care for all and protecting the country’s democracy.
“When I was first elected to Congress, we made history together,” she said in a video message announcing her re-election campaign. “I ran because I believe politics can change, and I couldn’t be more proud to represent Vermont and continue that fight in Washington.” If we have hope, we can stand up to the far right, which violates our rights and destroys our democracy.”

Until Balint’s victory in 2022, Vermont was the only state to have never had a woman in Congress. She is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives’ Judiciary and Appropriations committees and serves as vice chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
“The stakes are extremely high right now, with constant attacks on our reproductive rights, our planet, and our very democracy. But we cannot afford to give in to despair,” he said in a campaign message. Ta. “In 2024, we can lift our democracy from the brink and make government work for the people again. That’s what I’m fighting for in Congress.”
