Reds infielder Elie Delacruz usually uses an interpreter for his interactions with the media, but on Wednesday he did all of his media interactions without an interpreter, speaking entirely in English for the first time.
The Reds’ young star explained that it was important for him to talk about himself so the media and fans could really understand him.
“My fans understand me, [for] myself [to] “I want you to understand the fans,” he said. “I studied English hard so I could talk to you all. I think I did a good job.”
Dela Cruz (22), formerly In February, he said he wanted to speak to the media in English.said Wednesday he was in Cincinnati talking and practicing with his teammates.
“I just started with them and let it go,” Delacruz said. “I like talking to American men because it gives me confidence. I don’t have to [translator Jorge Merlos] already. “
Delacruz added that Mellos’ English skills were a huge help.
Reds manager David Bell told reporters he was impressed by Delacruz’s “courage” to put himself out there like that.
“He’s incredibly thoughtful. He’s humble and has an attitude of listening and learning,” Bell said.
The switch-hitting infielder finished his rookie season with a .235 batting average, .710 OPS, 13 home runs, 44 RBIs, 67 RBIs, and 35 stolen bases.

During his first few months, he dominated the league with cycles and three stolen bases per inning.
Dela Cruz told reporters through an interpreter last week that he was looking forward to the new season.
“I feel great,” Delacruz said. According to MLB.com. “Of course, there will be days when I don’t get as much results as I expected. But I feel like I’m ready for the season.”
The Reds open the 2024 season on Thursday against the Nationals.
