NASCAR’s roots date back to the days of moonshine runners who used modified cars to evade authorities on the rural roads of the southern United States.
last week, The history of the story has inserted itself. To the 21st century.
speedway motorsports announced On Tuesday, officials at the historic North Wilkesboro Speedway in the foothills of North Carolina said they had recently discovered what appears to be a “moonshine cave” dug out of a sinkhole beneath the racetrack’s grandstand. Announced.
Track employees were cleaning and inspecting the grandstand before the track hosted the NASCAR All-Star Race in May when they discovered cracks in some of the grandstand’s original concrete. I noticed that there was.
Upon further investigation, authorities discovered a sinkhole approximately 700 square feet in size beneath the concrete.
Steve Swift, an executive with Speedway Motorsports, which owns North Wilkesboro Speedway, said the discovery revives rumors that the speedway was once home to a “secret moonshine distillery.” He said he did.
“When we began the renovation and restoration of North Wilkesboro Speedway in 2022, we often heard that the old Moonshine was still operating on the property under the grandstand,” Swift said.
“Well, we haven’t found a still yet, but we have discovered a small cave and an inner wall that would have been a great place not only to make illegal booze but also to hide from the law. “We don’t know if it went in or out, but we don’t know what we’ll find if we dig further,” he explained.

North Wilkesboro Speedway first opened in 1947 and became one of NASCAR’s original tracks in 1949.
The speedway remained a mainstay of NASCAR’s main schedule until the track closed after the 1996 season, when NASCAR was exploding in popularity and expanding into a larger television market.
However, in 2021, Gov. Roy Cooper (D) will invest $40 million in funding for the state’s three historic NASCAR racetracks: Rockingham Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway, and North Wilkesboro Speedway. With this, the racecourse regained its vibrancy.
NASCAR’s premier series returned to the track in 2023 with an All-Star race, won by star driver Kyle Larson.
