White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Tuesday harshly criticized a North Carolina radio host who asked if President Biden had dementia.
“It was when I told a lot of people that I was talking to you today. But interestingly, they all said, ‘Why don’t you ask her, ‘Does the president have dementia?’ Told. WBT Charlotte radio host Mark Garrison said. “So, before we move on, is he?”\
“Mark, Mark, I can’t believe you’re asking me this question. It’s an incredibly offensive question,” Jean-Pierre responded.
Garrison pointed out, “You know people ask that,” and Jean-Pierre pushed back, saying, “You guys are going to take us down this rabbit hole.”
“Let’s be clear about this. For the past several years, the president’s physician has provided a very comprehensive account of the president’s health. This is the president, and if you see him every day, you’ll know his records and his If you really pay attention to what he’s done, you see how focused he has been on the American people and how historic his actions are,” Pierre continued.
“So I’m really, really, really not going to accept the premise of your question. I find it incredibly insulting. Then we can move on to the next question,” she said. I did.
Garrison accepted her answer and moved on to his next question, which centered on how Biden plans to rally support in North Carolina as gas and food prices remain high. Jean-Pierre noted that those prices have fallen significantly, pointing to some of Biden’s economic strengths.
“All important food items have become cheaper because of this president,” Jean-Pierre concluded. “Well, thank you very much, Mark. Have a wonderful, wonderful day.”
After she finished answering, a dial tone sounded. Radio hosts could be heard expressing surprise at Jean-Pierre’s sudden resignation, but expressed it as a spokesperson who hung up on him. Similar interpretations of this moment are circulating in conservative media circles.
But the White House objected to the profile, saying Jean-Pierre only had a few minutes for the interview and suggested he had warned the broadcaster in advance. The spokesperson also noted that the final dial tone was likely added artificially, and that such a tone is not typically heard today at the end of a call.
“As the president often does when he travels, Ms. Karine did several interviews in succession with radio stations, each lasting seven minutes. At the end of the agreed upon time, everyone was given a full interview. “This particular station did not air the full interview and instead added an artificial sound effect of the phone not ringing at the end of the call,” the White House said. Spokesman Andrew Bates said in a statement.
