A cave containing possible moonshine has been discovered hidden under the concrete bleachers at a NASCAR racetrack in North Carolina.
The discovery was made last week at the historic North Wilkesboro Speedway, built in 1947, where rumors of secret moonshine still circulate for decades. According to WBTV.
After the sinkhole formed, truck workers were checking the bleachers for damage when they discovered the hidden cave. When the seats were removed for further inspection, an open space was revealed, believed to be an underground cavern where bootleggers were brewing alcohol.
“As we began the renovation and restoration of North Wilkesboro Speedway in 2022, we often heard that the old moonshine was still operating on the property under the grandstand,” Speedway Motors said. said Steve Swift, senior vice president of sports operations and development. he told the outlet.
“Well, we haven’t found the still (yet), but we did find a small cave and an inner wall that was a perfect place not only to make illegal booze, but also to hide from the law,” he said. added.
“We don’t know how people got in and out, but we don’t know what we’ll find if we dig further.”
Speedway Motorsports staff is working on the next steps to repair the foundation and replace concrete in preparation for NASCAR All-Star Race Week, which runs from May 14 to May 19, WBTV reports. It is said to be under consideration.
North Wilkesboro Speedway is one of NASCAR’s original racetracks. The track hosted the season finale of the first Strictly Stock (now Cup) series in 1949.
It closed in 1996 but reopened in August 2022 to host a number of racing events.
