Simon & Schuster ditches ‘comprehensive book on Biden’s presidency’ amid low demand for Biden-related material

Publishing giant Simon & Schuster has canceled a contract with a prominent journalist for a “comprehensive” look at the Biden administration amid slowing sales of Biden-related books.

In February 2021, politiko Alex Thompson was a reporter for Politico at the time, and has since announced that he has joined the company. Axios He had a contract with Simon & Schuster to write a “comprehensive book on the Biden presidency” as a “national political correspondent.” The book was expected to provide “fresh reporting” from journalists who had seen the “White House transition” firsthand.

In its announcement, Politico claimed that the book would likely be published in “early 2024,” just in time for campaign season.

Now, as “early 2024” draws to a close, Politico has announced the termination of the deal.by Exit, Simon & Schuster “withdrew” its contract with Thompson, further hinting at a “soft market for books about President Joe Biden.” A spokesperson for the publisher declined Politico’s request for comment.

Thompson confirmed in X that his contract with Simon & Schuster has been terminated, but said he is “still writing” a promised book. “If you are a publisher and are interested, please let us know the email address or number listed in your bio,” he added.

Politico has been sounding the alarm for some time about how poorly sales of Biden-related books have been going.Just six months ago, the company article It was titled “Biden’s Book Is Still Bombing.” It also recently listed three major books about President Biden, only one of which sold more than 10,000 copies. His other two sold only 6,500 pieces combined.

These numbers are particularly egregious when compared to books related to former President Donald Trump. These books, especially those targeting the former president, easily sold hundreds of thousands of copies, Politico reported. Even Shattered, an exposé about Hillary Clinton’s failed 2016 presidential campaign, sold 125,000 copies and became a New York Times bestseller.

But Biden’s book doesn’t seem to be getting any attention. NBC News’ Jonathan Allen, co-author of “Shattered,” sought to put a positive spin on Biden’s worrying lead as he fights for a second term. ”[Biden] “Certainly compared to his predecessors, the president has tried to be a drama-free president,” Allen argued, “and that makes his story more compelling in terms of getting information.” It also makes writing a book difficult in terms of change.” Readers. ”

Eric Nelson of Broadside Books, the conservative division of HarperCollins, was more blunt: “Biden is never funny.”

Nelson also noted that Biden is in a bit of a political deadlock. “If your nickname is Sleepy Joe, it’s like you have to say this person is ruining everything and is extremely evil and incompetent,” he said.

“And that’s kind of a challenging combination.”
