One of the 700 islands in the Bahamas, Harbor Island is located on New Providence Island, 80 miles east of the Bahamas’ capital, Nassau. The island is one of the smallest in the country at approximately 3.5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide. According to the 2010 census, Harbor Island’s total population is 1,762.

Harbor Island does not have an airport, so visitors to the island must fly to North Eleuthera (ELH) Airport on nearby Eleuthera Island. Once on Eleuthera, take a water taxi to Harbor Island. It usually takes about 7 minutes to travel the 2.45 miles between the two islands by water taxi.

Dunmore Town is the only town on the island named after the 18th century Governor of the Bahamas, John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore. The town has boutique hotels, small shops, restaurants, grocery stores, and a historic district.

Originally inhabited by the Arawaks, one of two tribes of the Lucaya Indians, the island was discovered by Christopher Columbus during his expedition in 1492. The Lucayas were then destroyed by the Spanish conquistadors.

Harbor Island began to become a popular tourist destination in the 1920s. After Bahamas Airlines began serving Eleuthera Airport, tourism exploded and became Harbor Island’s main industry.
