Former President Donald Trump pursued a spate of Republican defections this year, throwing an already slim Republican majority into the air.
“Never forget our cowards and weaklings! What a shame,” Trump said in a statement. real social posts Sunday in response to an article about resigning Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.).
President Trump’s Easter criticism was aimed at Gallagher and former Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.), both of whom chose to retire early from Congress and leave their seats vacant. Mr Gallagher will resign from parliament in mid-April and will remain in his seat until January next year, while Mr Buck resigned last week to be replaced in June.
That vacancy, along with other vacancies in the House after Gallagher’s resignation, would reduce the Republican majority to just one seat, making the already difficult task of passing a partisan vote even more difficult. The situation has even led to speculation that Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (R-New York) could be nominated as Speaker of the House, and some Republicans have suggested that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (R-New York) could be nominated as Speaker of the House. (Louisiana) is rebelling.
Trump’s tirade against Gallagher reflects the disdain of much of the Republican Party, and the congressman appears to have timed his resignation to fully comply with Wisconsin law to avoid a special election. This ensures that his seat will remain vacant until January, rather than being filled within a few months.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) had previously called on the House to expel Gallagher as punishment, but the effort has had no real effect and has lost support.
The next vacant seat to be filled by former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is set to be filled at the end of April, with a one-seat difference and about three weeks remaining.
Mr Gallagher blamed his resignation on the dysfunction of the Republican Party.
“Ever since I started running, I’ve always said Congress shouldn’t be a career,” Gallagher said in an interview in February, before announcing his early resignation after announcing he would not stand for re-election.
“I think the fact that we have so many lifers and careerists in this institution is why this institution is so dysfunctional. When they created the Constitution and this country, the framers of the Constitution , I think they had in mind that you would all embark on a period of service, and then return to your private lives,” he continued.
