Michigan woman convicted of husband’s 2002 killing after extradition from Italy

A Michigan woman extradited from Italy for bludgeoning her husband to death in 2002 has been found guilty of second-degree murder.

An Eaton County jury needed just two hours Monday to decide the outcome of the case against Beverly McCollum, the Lansing State Journal reported.

Roberto Caraballo, 37, was suffocated and assaulted in the basement of his home in Charlotte, about 165 miles northwest of Detroit.

It wasn’t until 2015, more than a decade later, that a charred body was discovered in a metal locker near a blueberry field in western Michigan’s Ottawa County, but the body was identified as Caraballo.

McCollum, 63, was arrested in Italy in 2020 and held for more than two years before being returned to Michigan.

Prosecutor Doug Lloyd said Mr. McCollum wanted Mr. Caraballo removed after he was released from federal prison in 2002.

“Being with Robert was making her lifestyle difficult,” Ms Lloyd claimed.

Defense attorney Timothy Havis told jurors that McCallum was not involved in the killing but was lured into the car to remove the body.

However, McCallum was implicated at trial by witness Christopher McMillan, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and cooperated with police. He said Caraballo was attacked by McCallum and his daughter Dinine Ducharme.
